GLOBIMED has the following eight main objectives:
- Coordination of research activities of 14 scientific groups
in diverse locations on the Iberian Peninsula.
- Unification of information and centralisation of network activities
in a single database.
- Exchange of students and scientists among groups in the network
in order to provide training in complementary scientific fields.
- Laying the basis for nationally and internationally coordinated
projects (like the VI EU Framework Programme) through joint discussions
and pilot projects.
- Implementation of orientations of international committees
and organisations involved in global change and biodiversity (IGBP,
SCOPE, European Platform for Biodiversity, among others), with
special emphasis on the setting up of a Spanish network for long-term
ecological research (LTER).
- Preparation of an extensive and thematically organised mailing
list of scientists, managers and leaders of institutions involved
in the management of Mediterranean forests.
- Dissemination to key sectors outside the academic sphere, which
do not usually consult specialised academic journals; mainly managers,
national leaders in science policy as well as diverse companies
and institutions involved in the sustainable exploitation of natural
resources and/or conservation of nature.
- Preparation of a comprehensive scientific publication at an
intermediate level and aimed at a broad readership.
